Grounded: the Adventures of Rapunzel

groundedTitle: Grounded: The Adventures of Rapunzel
Author: Megan Morrison
Series: Tyme
Recommended for: 4th grade and up
Pages: 374 pages
Call Number/Link:  J FICTION MORRISON, M.

Synopsis: Rapunzel believes she is the luckiest person in Tyme, because Witch tells her so, but when Jack climbs into her tower to steal an enchanted rose, he hints that Witch is not telling the whole truth and Rapunzel, driven by her anger and fear, descends to the ground for the first time.

Rapunzel is a very innocent girl, who has only had contact with Witch.  Witch is her only source of information and she has no reason to doubt Witch.  One day she gets a visit from a boy named Jack. Jack informs her that they have met before, but Rapunzel doesn’t remember it.  He leaves, but not without leaving a ladder for her to climb down if she chooses to follow.  Our of concern for Witch Rapunzel goes to stop Jack and that is just her beginning of her adventure.  She meets many fairies and people on her journey that helper to become a stronger more informed person.

I liked this retelling of Rapunzel it was a fun read.  Since Rapunzel has never been out of the tower, everything to her is new and interesting.  I also like that she became her own person, not what others would want her to be or do in the end.

Castle Hangnail

castle hangnailTitle: Castle Hangnail
Author: Ursula Vernon
Series: n/a at this time
Recommended for: 3rd-5th Grade
Pages: 372 pages
Call Number/Link:  J FICTION VERNON, U.
Synopsis: When little, twelve-year-old Molly arrives at Castle Hangnail to fill the vacancy for a wicked witch, the minions who dwell there have no choice but to give her the job and at first it seems she will be able to keep the castle open, but Molly has quite a few secrets that could cause trouble.

This is a funny story of a wicked witch (not really) tries to fill a vacancy for master of a castle.  She feels she is wicked because her twin is a goody goody. She has six tasks she has to complete in order to become the master of the castle, like committing an act of  smiting and defending the castle.   So you get to laugh with her as she tries to complete the tasks as well as run a castle.  She also has a few secrets that may stop her from becoming the master. This book also shows what good and bad friends look like.  My favorite character is the goldfish who wears sweaters and is a hypercondriac.

Earwig and the Witch

Title:   Earwig and the Witch

Pages:   115 pages
Call Number/Link:  J JON

Rating:   ****

Synopsis:   Although an orphan, Earwig has always enjoyed living at St. Morwald’s, where she manages to make everyone do her bidding, but when she is taken in by a foster parents who are actually a witch and a demon, she has a hard time trying to turn the situation to her advantage.

Comments:  I was so happy to read a quick, fun book that even kids who don’t like fantasy would enjoy.  I especially appreciate that it’s over 100 pages, but not too far over 100 pages.  I zipped through this book without noticing that any time had passed.  Both girls and boys would enjoy this book, either independently or as a readaloud.

It reminded me of light fantasy books by Cornelia Funke and Eva Ibbotson that I’ve enjoyed.
