Milo and Jazz Mysteries The Case of the Poisoned Pig

Title: The Milo & Jazz Mysteries- The Case of the Poisoned Pig

Author: Lewis B. Montgomery

Series: The Milo & Jazz Mysteries

Recommended for: grades 2nd – 5th

Pages: 96

Call Number/Link:  CD J MON

SynopsisSet in Nazi Germany. 1936.

When Jazz’s pet piglet gets sick and the veterinarian suspects it was poisoned, she and Milo use their detective skills to try to figure out who did it.

My Thoughts: This is a great book to listen to in the car.  If you need a quick read for summer reading, this is a good recommendation.  It only takes one hour to listen to and you can listen in the car on the way to a adjacent town and back.  Cute story and keeps children interested.

Synopsis:

Cow and Pig are helping Mouse make a delicious soup, but Pig keeps trying to add ingredients that don’t make sense! Mouse is making a yummy pot of soup and Cow and Pig are helping add ingredients. Mouse adds four tomatoes, Cow adds five potatoes, and Pig adds…six galoshes?! Is that wise, Pig? Young readers will be so busy giggling at Pig’s antics, they won’t even realize they are counting, too. A twist ending and irresistible characters will make this a favorite read-aloud.

Comments:

I loved this one.  It made me laugh!  It would work well for Preschool Storytime or Toddler Time.  It could also work well as a readaloud for kids in kindergarten and first grade.  (And for first and second graders to read on their own.)

I was having so much fun that I didn’t remember later that it was a counting book.

Synopsis:   Who needs a treasure map when you have a pirate pig with a nose for gold? Stout Sam and his deckhand, Pip, find a pig washed up in a barrel on the beach. They want to keep her as a pet, but they soon realize Julie is no ordinary pig. She can sniff out treasure! What happens if Barracuda Bill, the greediest and meanest pirate who ever sailed the seas, hears about Julie’s special talent?

Comments:   The Pirate Pig is a fun early chapter book with cute colorful illustrations.  It is lightly humorous, though not roll on the floor funny.  It is a great choice for independent reading and would also work well as a read-aloud.

Amazon.com lists it as being appropriate for 7-10 years and/or grades 2-5.  I think it also works well as a read-aloud to children ages 4 and up who are experienced listeners.
