The Ship of the Dead

Title: The Ship of the Dead
Author: Rick Riordan
Series: Magnus Chase and the gods of Asgard
Recommended for: Grades 4-8
Pages: 421 pages
Call Number/Link:  J FICTION RIORDAN, R.
Synopsis: Magnus Chase, son of Frey, the god of summer and health, isn’t naturally inclined toward being a brave warrior. Still, with the help of his motley group of friends, he has achieved deeds he never would have thought possible. Now he faces his most dangerous trial yet. Loki is free from his chains. He’s readying Naglfar, the Ship of the Dead, complete with a host of giants and zombies, to sail against the Asgardian gods and begin the final battle of Ragnarok. It’s up to Magnus and his friends to stop him, but to do so they will have to sail across the oceans of Midgard, Jotunheim, and Niflheim in a desperate race to reach Naglfar before it’s ready to sail. Along the way, they will face angry sea gods, hostile giants, and an evil fire-breathing dragon. But Magnus’s biggest challenge will be facing his own inner demons. Does he have what it takes to outwit the wiley trickster god?

This is the third and final installment of Magnus Chase.  For those who are wondering Percy and Annabeth make an appearance in this book.  Magnus, Samirah, Alex, Hearthstone, Blitzen are joined by, floor 19 hall mates,  Thomas Jefferson Jr., Halfborn Gunderson, and Mallory Keen to stop Ragnarok from starting.  All of these characters are called to help aid in the trials to stop Ragnorak.  Lots of action, but it also has background information about the different charaters.  Now I am eagerly awaiting for the next Rick Riordan book that comes out in May.

The Hidden Oracle

hidden oracleTitle: The Hidden Oracle

Author: Rick Riordan

Series: The Trials of Apollo

Recommended for: 4th – 8th Grade

Pages: 376 pages

Synopsis: How do you punish an immortal?

By making him human.

After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disoriented, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus’s favor.

But Apollo has many enemies-gods, monsters, and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

Another great read.  This one is not like the others where they are just finding out they are a demigod, Apollo or Lester already knows who he is.  Apollo has to figure out how to get back in Zeus’s good graces, the last two times this has happened he had to serve a master for many years.  In comes Meg a young demigod that helps Apollo and then becomes Apollo’s master.  Apollo has to do as Meg asks until Zeus is satisfied.  Also weird things are happening at Camp Halfblood and Apollo feels like he has to be the one to solve what is going on.  He would rather get a demigod to do all of these things for him, but now that he is mortal he can’t make a demigod take on the challenges.

This will be an interesting series to follow and of course some of our famous demigods make some appearances.

The Siren

The siren

Title:     The Siren

Author:   Kiera Cass

Series: N/A

Recommended for:   Ages 13-17

Pages:   336

Call Number/Link:  Teen Fiction Cass, K.

Synopsis:   Kahlen is a Siren, bound to serve the Ocean by luring humans to watery graves with her voice, which is deadly to any human who hears it. Akinli is human—a kind, handsome boy who’s everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. Falling in love puts them both in danger…but Kahlen can’t bear to stay away. Will she risk everything to follow her heart?

This was such a spellbinding book.  I loved the way she writes the character so heart felt.  She is unique and feels so many things and does not know why until she asks the Ocean more questions.  The twists and turns keeps you on the edge of your seat and you will never guess the ending.  Surprising what people keep hidden because they just don’t think it’s possible.  Can’t wait to for the sequel to see where she takes it, there are so many possibilities.  A great read for 8th grade and beyond.

Something True

Something TrueTitle: Something True
Author: Kieran Scott
Series: A True Love Novel #3
Recommended for: 7th grade and up
Pages: 279 pages
Call Number/Link:  TEEN FICTION SCOTT, K.

Synopsis: Will the love of her life distract True from reuniting with…the love of her life? Find out in the third book in Kieran Scott’s delightful series that blends ancient mythology with contemporary romance.

True Olympia is in the home stretch. After being banished to Earth without her powers as punishment for falling in love with a mortal, True was tasked with matching three couples before she could return home. Now, with two couples fully in love, she is ready for her time in New Jersey to come to an end.

But as easy as it should be to match one more couple, things are complicated by her immortal love Orion (who also appeared on Earth, just without the memory of their love). He’s dating another girl, but can’t seem to avoid spending time with True. Something about her finally seems familiar to him. But if True wants to get back with Orion for real, she needs to focus. Just one more couple, one more couple…

This is the third and I do believe final book in the series. The author tells the story from many characters perspective so you are able to understand how they think. In this book I felt that the author brought in more mythology to mix with the romance than in the other books.  I enjoyed the other books, but if you are looking for more of a mythology retell or Percy Jackson this is not the book for you.  The book is heavy on the contemporary romance.  Typical high school drama with the different cliques and  a love triangle.

How to Sell it: This series is about Eros the goddess of love being punished for rescuing Orion, having a relationship with him, and ignoring her responsibility’s.  Zeus banishes her to earth without her powers with the assignment that she has to make three  matches.  Once she has done that she will be brought back and will be able to be with Orion again.  Eros has no concept of how to live like a human and she has to learn that as she is making her matches.
